Painting as a modular and spatial practice

Open Composition is an ongoing series that explores painting beyond the idea of a fixed, closed image. Each work is conceived as a set of painted modules that can exist both as autonomous elements and as part of a larger constellation.

Rather than defining a single, definitive composition, the work remains open to reconfiguration. The relationship between the elements shifts depending on their arrangement, allowing the painting to adapt to the space it inhabits while maintaining its internal coherence.

This approach introduces time, movement, and spatial awareness into the act of painting. The composition is not resolved once and for all on the canvas; it unfolds through interaction with the environment and through the viewer’s perception. Balance, tension, and rhythm emerge from proximity, distance, and repetition.

Open Composition reflects an interest in painting as a living structure—one that negotiates between intuition and construction, control and openness. The modular nature of the work invites multiple readings without prescribing a single outcome, emphasizing painting as an evolving dialogue rather than a closed statement.

A selection of works from the Open Composition series has been presented in situ at Art Eindhoven, Stand 53.
